Crime-predicting AI: The future of law enforcement
Dubai never fails to impress with its forward-thinking approach to technological innovation. Dubai Police recently unveiled the emirate’s ambitious approach to law enforcement: a robot policeman equipped with cameras and facial recognition software. China is taking a similar approach, with companies developing artificial intelligence designed to predict crimes before they occur. Dubai Police formally inducted a robotic policeman into the force this year. The robot, referred to by the media as ‘Robocop’, can read human faces and identify potential threats…

Wearables are the future, not smartphones
There’s been talk among analysts that smartphones will slowly become redundant in the future and make way for more innovative communication platforms. Despite the fact that US consumers now own 27 million more smartphones than they did last year, wearables will eventually take the lead, some analysts speculate, as communication requirements evolve over time. The wearable technology market is expected to grow from US$15.74 billion in 2015 to US$51.60 billion by 2022, at a compound annual growth rate of 15.51…

Another Oculus VR price drop fuels industry concerns
For the second time this year, the price of Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset equipment dropped, fueling speculation that the technology has become difficult to sell. The price of the headsets was reduced to just $399 for the company’s ‘Summer of Rift’ sale. Oculus VP, Jason Rubin insists the reduction was an attempt at giving the hardware mass market appeal now that games are more available, but critics aren’t as optimistic. VR emerged as a Kickstarter campaign in 2012…

Fallout from IT outages reflects human reliance on technology
Thousands of institutions around the world were subject to a series of “WannaCry” ransomware attacks over the weekend of May 12, causing data to be encrypted with a claim for payment. The ransomware virus brought computer systems from Russia to China to the UK and the US to their knees, reflecting just how much modern human societies rely on technology to function. The world is steadily becoming increasingly digitally-reliant which requires consistency, particularly when the integrity of a high-profile company…

As the value of data burgeons, new antitrust methods are needed
Corporate data is becoming what oil is to Saudi Arabia, says Clear Peak analyst Brad Cowdrey – outrageously profitable. There is so much valuable data available to corporations today, he says, and its potential uses are “proliferating so rapidly” that not using it would be “negligent”. But the dominance of tech giants that rule the data world has prompted calls for them to be broken up, the same way Standard Oil was in the early 20th century, over antitrust concerns.…

Could smart factories of the future make humans redundant?
One of the greatest threats to jobs around the world is automation - smart factories of the future. Germany’s ‘Industry 4.0’ initiative promotes the computerization of traditional industries such as manufacturing, as do many government initiatives around the world. While some praise the idea of “intelligent manufacturing”, tech leaders have spoken out in support of a universal basic income (UBI) to avoid technology companies being perceived as job destroyers. In 1962, the first industrial robot made its debut as ‘Unimate’…
